The town and county governments in Orange County will be closed and services will be off for the next few days as part of the winter holidays.
Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough all alerted residents to their winter holiday service schedules, which include closures, different hours and more through this week. Here are the aspects of the community’s local governments that will see changes:
Town of Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill residents will see several services disrupted, which is common around the Christmas holiday.
One of the only services not affected will be residential trash collection and curbside recycling. Yard waste, however, will not be collected until the week of December 27 and commercial trash collection will not be collected until next week.
Additionally, Chapel Hill Transit announced it will not operate on Saturday, December 25. The transit system will provide Sunday service routes on Friday, December 24 and other days the following week. Read the full holiday service schedule for buses here.
Administrative offices for the Town of Chapel Hill will be closed Thursday, December 23 through Monday, December 27. The Chapel Hill Public Library will also be closed from December 24 through December 27.
All Parks and Recreation indoor recreation and aquatic facilities are closed on December 24 and 25, although all outdoor Parks and Recreation amenities will remain open. The town’s Community Center, Hargraves Center and Homestead Aquatic Center will be open with varying hours on December 23 and December 26-27. For more information, or to make pool and open gym reservations online, see the Chapel Hill Parks page on the town website.
Town of Carrboro
Similar to Chapel Hill, the Town of Carrboro is closing its town hall building and administrative offices from December 23 through December 27.
Residents’ trash has been collected two days in advance to accommodate the two days off, with normal collection services resuming on Monday. Additionally, yard waste and loose leaves was not collected for the entire week ahead of Christmas Day.
Town of Hillsborough
The Town of Hillsborough is also closing its town offices and buildings for the Christmas holiday, from Thursday through Monday.
The town will not service solid waste routes on those days either. Residents whose garbage is typically collected on Friday are receiving the service on Thursday. Meanwhile, those whose trash is collected on Mondays will instead see it picked up on Tuesday.
Orange County Government
In addition to the town governments, the Orange County government and its facilities will be closed on Thursday, December 23 through Monday, December 27 to observe Christmas.
County facilities closing also means that COVID-19 testing sites at 113 Mayo Street in Hillsborough and the Southern Human Services Center in Chapel Hill will be closed on Friday, Saturday and Monday. With there being a high demand for COVID-19 tests, though, the location in Hillsborough will be open on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information about additional sites offering COVID-19 tests in the area can be found on the Orange County website.
While the county’s curbside recycling service is not expected to be disrupted, the Orange County Landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will close at noon on Friday and will remain closed through Sunday.
County transportation services will also only run the Carolina Dialysis route on Thursday, Friday and Monday, with full service returning on Tuesday, December 28.
Carolina Together Testing Center
While not a local government, UNC is also recognizing the holiday and is on a break for students and faculty. The campus’ Carolina Together Testing Center, its main COVID-19 testing site for students, is closed beginning Thursday and will remain closed through Sunday, January 2.
