Despite Christmas Day falling on a Sunday in 2022, the holiday will still affect local government services and facilities in Orange County.

Here’s a list of what services will be altered:

Town of Chapel Hill

The Town of Chapel Hill will observe the Christmas holiday on December 23, 26 and 27, which are a Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

Because of this, residential trash will not be collected on the 26th or 27th. The make-up days will be Thursday, December 29 and Friday, December 30, respectively. Curbside recycling collection will not be affected. Yard-waste collection, which would normally be scheduled for December 23, will be cancelled with no planned make-up day. Commercial trash will not be collected on Friday or Monday, with Friday’s collections taking place earlier in the week. Monday’s collections will be completed by the end of the week.

Chapel Hill Transit will not run on Christmas Day, and will operate Sunday-level service without the U Route on December 23, 24 and 26. It will run its local weekday service only on from December 27 through December 30.

The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed from December 23 through December 26. Administrative offices, the Community Center Pool, the Hargraves Community Center and the Teen Center will all be closed from the 23rd through the 27th. The Homestead Aquatic Center, Community Center and Northside Gym will be closed from the 23rd through the 26th, but will reopen on the 27th.

Waste and recycling centers will also be closed on the same days, with the Walnut Grove Church Road and Eubanks Road locations reopening on Monday. All other locations will reopen on Tuesday, December 27. The C&D Landfill will also be closed on the Monday and Tuesday.
