
Across the country on Friday, Black Americans and communities will celebrate Juneteenth — the national recognition of when the final slaves were freed in the 19th century and of African-American culture.
As a holiday, government services around the Orange County community will be affected on June 19 and the surrounding days. Here’s what residents can expect:
Town of Chapel Hill
The official town holiday will be on Friday, June 19, and most town offices will be closed.
There will be no changes to residential trash collection. Crews will not collect yard trimmings Friday and will collect them the following week during the regularly scheduled time. Crews will not collect commercial trash Friday and will complete collections earlier in the week. Curbside recycling collection normally scheduled for Friday will be done Saturday, June 20. The Orange County Waste and Recycling Centers, Landfill and Solid Waste Administrative Office will be closed Friday.
The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed Friday.
Chapel Hill Transit will operate its Sunday service Friday, meaning the U route will not run. The FCX and NS routes will run.
Public parks, greenways, trails and picnic shelters will be open Friday, but the Parks and Recreation administrative offices and the Corner Teen Center will be closed.

Town of Carrboro
Town offices will be closed Friday. Yard waste and loose leaf collection will be postponed to Monday, June 22. For more information from the Town of Carrboro, click here.
Town of Hillsborough
Town offices will be closed Friday. Garbage will be collected the following Monday, including the monthly bulk item collection which would have fallen on June 19. For more information from the Town of Hillsborough, click here.
Orange County Government
All Orange County administrative offices will be closed Friday. All landfills and waste centers will be closed, with recycling collection delayed until Saturday.
All library locations will also be closed on Friday as well. As always, local emergency services remain available to community members 24/7.
