The Monet Richardson Community Foundation is formally dissolving, executive director Pat Richardson announced Monday. The announcement comes as the foundation was celebrating its fifth anniversary.

While this marks the closing of an important chapter, we choose to reflect on the many positive moments, relationships, and accomplishments that have defined the Foundation’s five years of service,” Richardson wrote in a release. “This decision was made with great consideration and sincere appreciation for the opportunity we have had to serve our community.”

During its five years of service, the foundation provided more than 1,800 backpacks filled with school supplies to children in Orange, Edgecombe and Nash counties and elsewhere across North Carolina. The foundation also awarded $16,000 in academic scholarships.

Although the Foundation is coming to the end of its organizational journey, the impact of the work accomplished together does not end here,” Richardson wrote. “The memories created, opportunities provided, scholarships awarded, children supported, lives touched, and relationships built over the past five years will remain a meaningful part of the Foundation’s legacy.”

Pat Richardson began the foundation in 2021 in honor of her daughter Kristian “Krissy” Monet Richardson, who died in a car accident earlier that year. Krissy Richardson had previously worked with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA Y Learning program while earning an undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and a master’s degree from North Carolina Central University.

“The vision and the need that she saw and decided to do something about is so impactful,” Pat Richardson told 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck in February. “And it needed to continue, so we created the legacy foundation in her name.”

As part of the dissolution process, the foundation says its remaining assets will be allocated between the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA and East Carolina University, “to continue supporting the legacy work that reflects MCRF’s mission and values.”

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has been part of the Monet Richardson Community Foundation,” wrote Pat Richardson. “Your generosity, encouragement, time, and belief in our mission made our work possible. We are grateful for all that we have accomplished together and for the lasting impact that will continue through the lives of those we were privileged to serve.
