Across the country this week, governments and communities will celebrate the Fourth of July holiday — with some scaling up their traditions with it being the United States’ semiquincentennial, or 250th anniversary of its founding.
A variety of Fourth of July festivities are set to take place across Orange County too, with a mix of long-standing traditions and events special to the 250th anniversary. Here are the details about how local governments are celebrating and how to prepare to attend:
Carrboro’s Day Full of Traditions
From 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m, Carrboro’s July 4 celebration is set to include a variety of activities and celebrations for all ages.
The day will kick off at Weaver Street Market with booths for patriotic tattoos, hat making and decorating, patriotic flag coloring, and bike and wagon decorating. A costume contest and The People’s Parade to Town Hall will follow, led by The Bulltown Strutters.
From 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the main activities at Carrboro Town Commons include live music, senior bingo, face painting, food vendors, a pie-eating contest, and more. The 13th Annual Community Reading of the Frederick Douglass Essay “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro” will be held rain or shine at the Carrboro Century Center from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Free, two-hour parking is available in Carrboro’s public downtown lots. Attendees are encouraged not to park in the Carr Mill Mall lot, which is reserved for mall customers. Those who park in the private lot and leave the mall premises risk towing.
Guests to the downtown events are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to help support PORCH. Donation bins available at Weaver Street Market and Carrboro Town Commons.

‘Together We Are America’ Celebration in Hillsborough
Hosted in partnership with Orange County, Hillsborough’s day-long event focuses on community, history, and culture, featuring live music, demos, craft and food vendors, and activities for kids.
The festivities will take place at River Park in downtown from 10 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. The entertainment lineup includes Apple Chill Cloggers, Blue Star Travelers, Los Peligros Del Norte, and more. Actor and playwright Mike Wiley will also deliver a live reading of “Well, I Declare!” exploring the Declaration of Independence.
A We the People Parade is set for 4:45 p.m., ahead of which attendees can work with local artists to make a handmade “Flag of the Future,” showing what they wish for the country over the next 250 years. Kids are encouraged to dress as their favorite character from U.S. history. The evening will conclude with a performance from Triangle Jazz Orchestra and a laser light show by Solar Syndicate.
The day will include free watermelon and food trucks. Parking is available throughout downtown Hillsborough. Limited ADA parking is available at 140 E. Margaret Lane behind the Orange County Justice Facility. That parking is reserved for vehicles displaying a valid ADA license plate or placard, and those needing accessible parking are encouraged to stop at the entrance and follow directions from event staff.

Chapel Hill Drone Show
The Town of Chapel Hill is set to celebrate July 4 differently this year, with a new location and form of entertainment.
From 7 p.m. – 9:45 p.m., a collection of 300 synchronized drones will “lift off and arrange themselves into shapes and images, using light and color to paint designs across the Chapel Hill sky,” according to the town. The display replaces the town’s traditional fireworks display, partly due to community feedback shared in a 2024 survey about the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration and to better support Chapel Hill’s sustainability and inclusivity initiatives.

The event will also be held at Chapel Hill High School, concluding five years of firework displays at Southern Village. The new location aims to improve safety for attendees, particularly around vehicle traffic. There will be three viewing sites at the high school. Drone shows must be viewed from a certain angle to see text and images properly.
Free event parking is available at Rosemary Parking Deck and UNC’s RR Lot. Frequent shuttles will run between the parking options and Chapel Hill High School before and after the event (6pm-8:45 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. – 10:05 p.m.) No parking will be available at the high school, Smith Middle School, or Seawell Elementary School. Onsite parking will only be available for event staff and ADA-accessible spots. Those spaces are first come, first serve.
Attendees are encouraged to bring water, coolers, blankets, and chairs. Mike’s Icys will be onsite and available for purchase. Tents, tailgates, pets, alcohol, and glass items are prohibited.

Mebane
From 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., the City of Mebane’s July 4 celebration is set to include backyard games, food trucks, inflatables, and fireworks.
The Independence Day festivities will take place at the Mebane Arts and Community Center. A kids zone area will also feature Gravity Check Juggling, Upside Aerial and Arts, and Zia Bubble Show. Live music by Part Time Party Time Band begins at 6:30 p.m., with giveaways during intermission.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, and no pets or personal fireworks are allowed. The event is a drug and alcohol-free environment. If fireworks are canceled due to inclement weather, they will be rescheduled. Parking opens at 4:30 p.m.
