
The celebration of Independence Day on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 will affect several local government services in and around Orange County. Here’s a look at what typical services will and won’t be happening during the weekend:
Town of Chapel Hill
All Chapel Hill administrative offices will be closed Friday, July 3, as the town government recognizes the holiday.
Residential trash pickup will not be affected. Crews will not collect commercial trash Friday and will complete collections earlier in the week. Yard trimmings will not be collected Friday, and crews will collect them the following week during the regularly scheduled time.
The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed Saturday, July 4.
Chapel Hill Transit will operate Sunday service on Friday — the U and NU routes will not run, but the 420 route will. Chapel Hill Transit will not operate Saturday, with the exception of shuttles to and from the celebratory drone show at Chapel Hill High School that evening. All Chapel Hill public parks, greenways and playgrounds will be open Friday and Saturday. The Parks and Recreation administrative offices, Corner Teen Center and Hargraves Community Center will all be closed. The Public Housing administrative office will also be closed on Friday.

Town of Carrboro
The Town of Carrboro’s administrative offices will be closed Friday, July 3. Emergency police, fire and rescue services may be reached by calling 911.
Household waste collection normally scheduled for Friday will be moved to Monday, July 6.
The town government will celebrate Independence Day with its annual reading of Frederick Douglass’ essay “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.” The reading will begin at 2 p.m. at the Carrboro Century Center’s Century Hall.
The town is also warning motorists to expect delays in downtown Carrboro the morning of Saturday, July 4 due to the “Four on the Fourth” road race, which begins at 8 a.m. in front of McDougle Middle School on Old Fayetteville Road. The route will take runners down Carol Street, Hillsborough Road, West Main Street and James Street before looping back toward McDougle.

Town of Hillsborough
Town offices will be closed on Friday, July 3. Residential solid waste will not be collected that day. Residents normally serviced on Fridays will instead receive service the following Monday, July 6.

Orange County
All Orange County administrative offices will be closed Friday, July 3. Curbside recycling collection will occur as scheduled on Friday, despite the holiday. The Construction & Demolition (C&D) Landfill and all Waste & Recycling Centers will remain open Friday but will be closed Saturday, July 4. They will resume normal operations Sunday, July 5.
All Orange County Public Library locations will be closed Friday and Saturday and will reopen for regular hours Sunday.
Orange County’s Animal Services Center will be closed Friday and will resume regular hours Saturday. The facility will be closed as usual Sunday.
