Three juveniles are facing charges following a series of vehicle break-ins in Chapel Hill Tuesday.

In a release, the Town of Chapel Hill confirmed the break-ins occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. in two areas:

  • Franklin Street and Estes Drive
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Weaver Dairy Road

The town release says officers from the Durham Police Department detained the juveniles after Chapel Hill Police spotted them leaving town and heading toward Durham from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Interstate 40. Per the release, officers from the Chapel Hill Police coordinated information with Durham officers and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to stop and detain the suspects. An investigation is ongoing.

In light of Tuesday’s break-ins, the Chapel Hill Police are sharing safety tips. Community members are urged to:

  • Always lock your car doors and windows
  • Do not leave valuables or keys inside your vehicle
  • Park in well-lit, well-traveled areas when possible
  • Never leave your vehicle running and unattended

“Our community members are critical in helping us with these cases,” said Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew. “Please call 911 if you witness, discover, or have other information about a vehicle break-in, so we can quickly respond.”

Tuesday’s break-ins come less than a month after the Chapel Hill Police Department announced it had formed a dedicated team to investigate break-ins across town. That announcement came after 14 break-ins were reported the weekend of Aug. 1-2.
