Two weeks after a shooting injured one person outside a Chapel Hill apartment complex, local authorities say the suspect has been detained and charged.

A release from the Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed the arrest of 22-year-old Jose Luis Enamorado Flores of Chatham County, saying he faces 21 different charges stemming from the Apr. 4 incident at the Rise Chapel Hill apartment complex on Westminster Drive. Those include, police said, two counts of attempted murder, eight counts of discharging into an occupied dwelling, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew said Enamorado Flores was arrested in Chatham County and thanked the other law enforcement agencies who helped investigate and make the arrest outside of town limits.

“The thorough work of our team of investigators paired with great coordination with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and SBI agents has been key in making this arrest,” Lehew said. “We’re incredibly grateful for their support.”

The update came after the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged a “heavy law enforcement presence” in parts of the county tied to the Chapel Hill Police Department’s investigation. A release on Saturday said its deputies assisted law enforcement in serving four search warrants at separate addresses, leading to some community calls with questions — but told the public that the operation was “completed safely and without incident.”

“We understand a large police presence can be concerning for residents,” Chatham County Chief Deputy Steve Maynor said on Saturday. “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as deputies worked alongside our law enforcement partners to assist in this investigation. I’m proud of the teamwork and care our personnel demonstrated throughout the operation, and we’re grateful it was completed safely and without incident.”

Enamorado Flores is being held at the Orange County Detention Center without bond, according to Chapel Hill Police. He is expected to make a first appearance in court on the charges Monday at 8:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the Chapel Hill alert said the victim in the shooting has been treated for their injuries and its department’s investigation is still ongoing.
