The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has identified and charged 17 businesses across the county found to be in violation of state gambling laws. The charges come at the end of a multi-month investigation specifically targeting video gambling machines. Included among the charges are possession of illegal gaming equipment, promotion of illegal gambling and cash payouts for winnings.
In August, investigators from the sheriff’s office executed search warrants at six different illegal gambling operations found to be in possession of “a felonious amount” of gaming machines, defined as five or more. Officers seized computer components, various documents and U.S. currency proceeds from the businesses. Nine individuals face a total of 36 felonies and 39 misdemeanors stemming from the operations.
“In our mission to keep our community safe, we’re focused on enforcing the law while recognizing the many responsible businesses that contribute to Chatham County’s positive atmosphere,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Our aim is not to shut anyone down, but to ensure everyone does right by our community.”
In Chapel Hill, A&M Amusement LLC at 11624 U.S. 15-501 was found to be in possession of 35 gaming machines. All three of the business’s owners are charged with seven felonies. Lakeside Grocery at 1718 Farrington Point Road was also found to be in possession of two illegal machines and was issued a compliance letter ordering their removal.
Two Pittsboro businesses were issued compliance letters: Pittsboro Food Mart at 133 Hillsboro Street and Pittsboro Mini Mart at 516 West Street.
