A pair of Chatham County residents face fraud charges after stealing a debit card from the mail and making cash withdrawals from its account.
A release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office on Friday said its investigators charged 36-year-old Quamane Matthews of Pittsboro and 39-year-old Sabrina Willis Glasscock of Goldston after a victim reported that their new debit card did not arrive in the mail as expected. After visiting the State Employees’ Credit Union and finding several cash withdrawals at ATMs, the victim took bank statements showing the transaction to the sheriff’s office.
From there, investigators used surveillance video from the ATM locations to spot and identify Glasscock and Matthews as the suspects in the case. Warrants are now out for both of their arrests and, as of Friday afternoon, neither have been served. Matthews is charged with one count of felony financial card theft, 11 counts of financial card fraud, 11 counts of misdemeanor identity theft and 11 counts of felony obtaining property by false pretenses. Glasscock, meanwhile, faces one count of felony financial card theft, two counts of misdemeanor financial card fraud; two counts of felony identity theft, and two counts of felony obtaining property by false pretenses.
Both suspects are scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on the charges Monday, August 31.
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office encourages community members to report any suspicious financial or fraudulent activity by calling (919) 542-2911, with its office regularly working to assist affected residents. The office also has a Scams page featured on its website to warn residents of common fraud schemes used to take victims’ money.
