The Town of Pittsboro has hired Kevin Lewis as its next Planning Director. Lewis, who comes to Pittsboro after managing the planning program with the nearby Town of Knightdale, will begin work Aug. 31.

“We are excited to welcome Kevin to the Town of Pittsboro,” Town Manager Jonathan Franklin said in a release Monday morning. “His extensive experience guiding growing communities, combined with his collaborative leadership style and commitment to thoughtful planning, makes him an excellent fit for Pittsboro. As our community continues to grow, Kevin’s expertise will help ensure we preserve the character of our town while planning responsibly for the future.”

“Generally, [we’re] trying to increase our capacity across a lot of departments,” Pittsboro mayor Kyle Shipp told 97.9 The Hill’s Andrew Stuckey in July. “We’re really proud of our level of service that we have, and we want to make sure that we maintain that for all cases. And the Planning Director is a big piece of that.”

Lewis has worked in Knightdale for the past seven years. His role included such duties as overseeing development review processes during a period of rapid growth in Wake County. Prior to his work there, Lewis also worked with the GoTriangle transit service as well as the governments of the Town of Rolesville and Franklin County.

Similarly to Knightdale, Shipp described Pittsboro as a “high-growth community,” and told Stuckey that Lewis’ experience in dealing with Knightdale’s growth made him an attractive candidate for the Pittsboro job.

“There’s planning that you learn about in an academic setting, and then there’s planning that happens in the Triangle area,” Shipp said. “We’re excited to bring in some additional experience there.”

Lewis is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a North Carolina Certified Zoning Official. Currently, he sits on the Transportation and Land Use Committee for the Triangle chapter of the Urban Land Institute. He will graduate with his Master of Public Administration degree from North Carolina State University in December 2026.
