Chapel Hill’s Community Design Commission will discuss the first iteration of a proposed hotel on Rosemary Street at its monthly meeting Tuesday.

The proposed plan would renovate the space around the historic town hall building on West Rosemary Street, near the intersection with Columbia Street. A four-to-five story hotel with as many as 140 rooms would be built, under the proposal, while the town hall goes untouched.

Part of the land is designated by the town for potential development. While the historic town hall would be incorporated into construction plans, three buildings are currently on the land where the hotel is proposed, including Glenn’s Tailor Shop and a former location of a church.

The developer is requesting a rezoning of the land to the north side of the project, as well as a property exchange of the land directly beside the historical town hall and space along Pritchard Avenue.

The initial vision for the hotel includes 80 on-site parking spots and entrances off Rosemary and Columbia Streets. Some of the potential amenities would include meeting rooms and a rooftop terrace overlooking Rosemary Street. The proposal also suggests improving the area directly around the old town hall to create more open space.

The plans are coming before the CDC for a courtesy review. Additionally, the commission will discuss proposals for an additional entrance to the Wegman’s grocery store and a putt-putt center at Carraway Village on Tuesday night.

The commission will hold its meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill’s Town Hall council chamber. More information is available on the town’s website.
