Kevin Valdez of Chapel Hill won the top prize of $200,000 on a $5 scratch-off ticket, the North Carolina Education Lottery said in a release Wednesday.

Valdez bought his lucky ticket for the Cash King game from the Short Stop convenience store on West Main Street in Carrboro. He arrived at lottery headquarters in Raleigh Tuesday to claim his prize. After required state and federal tax withholdings, Valdez took home $144,021.

The Cash King game is one of several offered by the North Carolina Education Lottery. It debuted in January with four $200,000 top prizes, one of which was just claimed by Valdez. Only one top prize remains unclaimed, the lottery said.

According to data from the lottery, education programs in Orange County received $8.2 million in support from lottery funds in 2025.
