For the first time in two years, Orange County is seeing in-person celebrations and events for the Fourth of July holiday. Residents can expect to see gatherings for community readings, food festivals and fireworks displays on Sunday, but the local governments are also recognizing the holiday on Monday, July 5.

This weekend and to start next week, some town and county government services will be altered because of the closure. All offices for the local governments will be closed, but here’s a list of additional service residents can expect to see changed.

Town of Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill community members will see several town facilities closed for the holiday, as well as services altered.

In addition to the Office and Maintenance Division being closed, the Chapel Hill Community Center, Hargraves Center, Northside Gym and the Teen Center will be closed both Sunday and Monday. The Chapel Hill Public Library will also be closed on Sunday.

All parks, greenways, trails, dog parks, playgrounds, picnic shelters and other outdoor amenities will be open. The Homestead Aquatics Center and the AD Clark Outdoor Pool will be open from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, as well as from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday by reservation.

Trash collection will be affected for both residential pick-up and commercial pick-up. Those affected on Monday will see their garbage collected on Wednesday, July 7.

Additionally, Chapel Hill Transit will not operate on Sunday. Monday’s operations will be running Sunday routes, except the U and NU lines. The EZ Rider service will be available from 8:15 a.m. to 6:52 p.m. and the GoTriangle 420 bus route will run as well.

Town of Carrboro

The Town of Carrboro is not planning any garbage collection changes on Monday due to the holiday, but another type of collection will be delayed. Yard waste and loose leaves will not be collected, with residents who normally receive this service slated to see yard waste picked up on Tuesday, July 6.

Town of Hillsborough

The main service disrupted in Hillsborough, besides the town offices being closed, is garbage collection. The town government will not have trash pick-up on Monday to recognize the Fourth of July holiday. Routes typically serviced on Mondays will instead be combined with collection on Tuesday. Monthly bulk items collection will not be affected.

Orange County Government

In addition to town governments, some services from the Orange County government will also be affected this weekend.

The county’s walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinics in Hillsborough and Chapel Hill will be closed Saturday through Monday. COVID-19 testing sites will also be closed on Monday.

The Orange County Landfill, as well as the waste and recycling centers, will be closed on Sunday. The landfill and the Eubanks and Walnut Grove Waste and Recycling ceneters will reopen on Monday. Curbside recycling will not be affected by the holiday, according to the local government.

Additionally, Orange County Public Transportation will operate on a limited service, only serving the in-county dialysis route.
