Local governments across Orange County recognized the start of winter holidays through several events this month. For Thanksgiving this week, local government offices and services will be closed in recognition.
The various town governments and Orange County alerted residents to the changes in recycling pick-up, administrative hours, and park facilities from Thursday, November 24 and through Friday, November 25. Here are some of the services affected over the towns’ holiday:
Orange County Government
Curbside recycling for Orange County residents will be delayed by one day due to the holiday — meaning Thursday’s routes will be scheduled for Friday and Friday’s routes will be collected on Saturday. The Solid Waste department requests recyclers continue to have their carts out by 7 a.m. for collection. Similarly, the department said the county landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will re-open on Friday after being closed on Thanksgiving Day.
County transportation services will also only run the Carolina Dialysis route on Friday, with full service returning on Monday, November 28. Trip requests for Monday must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23.
The COVID-19 vaccine clinic set up at the Bonnie B. Davis Center in Hillsborough will not operate on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, according to Orange County. Additionally, the Orange County Animal Services building will be closed for that stretch of days, including its normal closure on Sunday. If anyone experiences an animal-related emergency, or any other kind of health crisis, they are encouraged to call 911.
Town of Chapel Hill
Of the solid waste services offered by the town, residential trash pick-up will not be affected by Thanksgiving. Yard trimmings, however, were not collected this week and commercial trash was collected early in order to allow staff to take Thursday and Friday off.
Additionally, several other town services will be affected. Chapel Hill Transit will not run any operations on Thursday and will operate its Sunday Service on Friday, meaning no U, NU or 420 routes nor any Safe Rides. EZ Rider hours will last from 8:15 a.m. through 6:52 p.m.
The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed on both Thursday and Friday before resuming with weekend hours. The town’s Office and Maintenance Division will also be closed.
The Parks and Recreation department said its offices, the Chapel Hill Community Center and Pool, the Hargraves Center, Northside Gym, Homestead Aquatic Center and the Teen Center will all be closed on Thanksgiving Day. The Homestead Aquatic Center, the Chapel Hill Community Center and Northside Gym will re-open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, while the other facilities, including administrative offices, remain closed.
Town of Carrboro
Carrboro residents’ trash has been collected two days in advance to accommodate the two days off, with normal collection services set to resume on Monday. Additionally, yard waste and loose leaves will not be collected for all of Thanksgiving week. Like the other local governments, administrative offices will be closed Thursday and Friday — including the Town Hall building.
Town of Hillsborough
The Town of Hillsborough is also closing its town offices and buildings for the Thanksgiving holiday, both Thursday and Friday.
The town will not service solid waste routes, with residents whose garbage is typically collected on Thursday receiving the service on Wednesday. Additionally, those whose trash is collected on Fridays will be serviced on Monday. A full explainer on Hillsborough’s annual trash collection can be found on the town’s website.
