The Orange County region is celebrating the start of winter holidays in a variety of ways this week, but will see a handful of local government services affected.

The town governments and Orange County government alerted their residents of changes to trash pickup, public buildings and other items that will be off on Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26 as they recognize Thanksgiving. Here are some of the services that will see changes over the next few days:

Town of Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill residents will see some services disrupted on Thursday. While residential trash collection will not be affect, yard waste was not collected for residents at all this week. Curbside recycling will not be affected by the holiday.

Additionally, Chapel Hill Transit will not operate on Thursday and will provide Sunday service routes on Friday.

Services like the Chapel Hill Public Library, the town’s Community Center, Community Center Pool, Hargraves Center, Northside Gym and Teen Center will be closed on Thursday. Parks and Recreation administrative offices will be closed both Thursday and Friday.

The Homestead Aquatics Center and the A.D. Clark Pool will re-open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, although the former requires residents to reserve a time slot.

Town of Carrboro

Similar to Chapel Hill, the Town of Carrboro is closing its town hall building and administrative offices on Thursday and Friday.

Residents’ trash has been collected two days in advance to accommodate the two days off, with normal collection services resuming on Monday, November 29. Additionally, yard waste and loose leaves will not be collected for all of Thanksgiving week.

For county recycling services, the Town of Carrboro said its residents’ pick-up scheduled for Thursday will be collected on Saturday, November 27.

Town of Hillsborough

The Town of Hillsborough is also closing its town offices and buildings for the Thanksgiving holiday, both Thursday and Friday.

The town will not service solid waste routes, with residents whose garbage is typically collected on Thursday receiving the service on Wednesday. Additionally, those whose trash is collected on Fridays will be serviced on Monday.

Orange County Government

In addition to the town governments, the Orange County government will be closed on Thursday, with offices resuming normal operations on Monday.

County facilities closing also means that COVID-19 testing sites at the Whitted Building in Hillsborough and the Southern Human Services Center in Chapel Hill will be closed on Thursday. The Hillsborough site, however, will re-open on Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will also open on Sunday, November 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Additionally, the Orange County Landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will not be open on Thursday and curbside recycling throughout the county will not be collected. Both recycling and landfill-related services will resume on Friday.

County transportation services will also only run the Carolina Dialysis route on Friday, with full service returning on Monday..

Carolina Together Testing Center

While not a local government, UNC is also recognizing the holiday and is on a break for students and faculty. The campus’ Carolina Together Testing Center, its main COVID-19 testing site for students, is closed Wednesday through Sunday, with regular hours resuming on Monday.
