Despite allowing just one shot Friday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, the UNC men’s soccer team fell in the NCAA College Cup Semifinals to Marshall by a score of 1-0.
The Tar Heels (9-5-4) racked up 11 shots in the match–with five ending up on target–but were unable to make the most of their opportunities.
Marshall scored the game’s only goal in the 60th minute when a pass was deflected to Jamil Roberts, who knocked the ball past UNC goalie Alec Smir.
UNC senior forward Giovanni Montesdeoca–who was named a Third Team All-American earlier this week–had a chance to tie it up five minutes later, but saw his shot bounce off the crossbar. The Tar Heels then had another shot sail just over the crossbar in the 81st minute courtesy of Joe Pickering.
The Tar Heels also finished the night with eight corner kick chances while Marshall went the entirety of the night without earning one.
It simply just wasn’t meant to be for UNC, which found new life in the spring and rode a late-season hot streak to a surprise appearance in the College Cup.
Marshall advances to play either No. 2 Pitt or No. 3 Indiana in the championship game.
