Giovanni Montesdeoca scored just over a minute into the second period of extra time on Friday night in South Bend to give the third-ranked UNC men’s soccer team an important 1-0 ACC road win over the No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
UNC racked up 15 shots in the match compared to just three for the Fighting Irish, but the Tar Heels (6-1, 2-0 ACC) were unable to break through until the final moments.
Raul Aguilar played a beautiful one-touch pass to Montesdeoca in extra time, which allowed the latter to chip the goalkeeper in a 1-on-1 battle for the goal.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Tar Heels, who are looking to make their third straight NCAA College Cup appearance this year.
