Welcome to Woman Crush Wednesday!

This week, join 97.9 The Hill’s Ali Evans for a conversation with Soteria Shepperson — the multi-hyphenate poet, musician, advocate and activist that is also working to coordinate IFC’s REAL Transformation initiative. Shepperson is often styled as an “art-tivist,” combining art and activism in her work.

“What I wanted to start doing is naming art and activism at the same time,” said Shepperson. “And I’m not the creator of that term, but I think it came out in the last few years, and so I thought it just fit perfectly. How do we take art and activism, and how do we like transfuse this thing throughout the world?”

The REAL Transformation initiative, with REAL standing for Race, Equity, Action, Leadership, is a brand-new effort from IFC being led by Shepperson.

“I’ve been a part of the community of IFC or the last four years, and my hope is to really help the organization look into how we can do things with each other, as opposed to doing things for each other,” said Shepperson. “I’ve worked in several nonprofits in different communities, and there is always desire in our heart, even with the best of intentions, ‘what can I do for you?’ … and it’s really more empowering when we can look at them and say, ‘hey, like what, what can we do together to get you to the place that you really want to be?'”

Listen below for the full conversation between Ali and Soteria, and tune in next Wednesday for the next WCW introduction to another amazing woman in our community!
