Welcome to Woman Crush Wednesday!

This week, join 97.9 The Hill’s Ali Evans with special guest Corbyn Baker, the 11-year-old winner of the recent Sarah James Fulcher Fishing Tournament in Cedar Island! Baker’s prize-winning fish measured in at a whopping 51.5 inches, according to the tournament website, and was caught from her family’s 20-foot fishing boat after registered for the tournament day-of.

“I’ve grown up in a very outdoorsy family for as long as I can remember,” said Baker. “We’ve spent as much time as we can on lakes and ponds and the ocean — and as soon as I was able to hold a fishing rod, my parents got me a little Barbie rod. When my dad went out to pond to catch catfish, I would go and catch little bluegill.”

All of her time, dedication and effort paid off in landing a tournament-winning fish against the stiff competition presented by almost 400 other anglers. But with a little luck and a lot of patience, Baker pulled through.

“If you want to try something, you have to have courage,” said Baker. “If you’re excited to try something, but you’re too scared to do it, you go and get somebody to help you, like a mentor. I would’ve never been able to win the redfish tournament without my dad and him encouraging me to reel up the fish. I would’ve never been able to win if he wasn’t there and you have to have them willing to do it. Somebody that’s going to help you get better.”
