Welcome to Woman Crush Wednesday!

This week, join 97.9 The Hill’s Ali Evans for a conversation with Danelle Alex — co-owner of Goldfish Swim School in Chapel Hill, along with her husband. According to Alex, she hadn’t particularly thought of herself as a “business person” until the actual process of opening one began.

“I was definitely nervous for myself, there’s a whole lot of stuff that I didn’t know that I’ve had to learn on the fly,” said Alex. “I had to really kind of remove a lot of self doubt that I couldn’t do it and say to myself, ‘there’s no reason you can’t learn this and let’s just go.'”

The Goldfish Swim School website features a quote from Ryan Murphy, the Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer, that rings particularly true — “Swimming is the only sport that’s also a life-saving skill.” At Goldfish, Alex manages the stress of teaching that skill to children along with her life as a business owner, mother and wife.

“I think really being intentional about self-care is something that I really have to strive for,” said Alex. “As parents, and as mothers, as business owners, we have to take the time for ourselves. Otherwise, we won’t be able to give our best selves to whatever else we want to.”

Listen to the full conversation between Ali and Danelle below, and hear more about becoming a business owner and finding the balance needed to navigate some of life’s more choppy waters.
