Welcome to Woman Crush Wednesday!

This week, join 97.9 The Hill’s Ali Evans for a conversation with Elle Kehres — the newest member of 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro.com’s reporting team and a community advocate working to educate and inform on the subject of eating disorders.

Trigger warning: The conversation with Elle and Ali is an honest and candid discussion about recovering from an eating disorder, and anyone who is currently struggling or going through recovery may find the conversation difficult.

As a survivor of an eating disorder, Elle is passionate about providing those currently struggling or seeking information with resources and a safe community — neither of which she has had access to in the past.

“I initially probably really developed my eating disorder when I was 15 years old,” said Kehres. “During that time, I had access to absolutely no resources. No one was talking about it. We weren’t educated on it in health classes. Doctors didn’t really know how to approach it. You didn’t have those screenings. For a long time I struggled in the dark, not even knowing how to address this until I eventually started going to therapy, probably when I was 19.”

According to Elle, “fostering an open forum” when it comes to the subject of eating disorders is a crucial element in understanding and treating the issue holistically.

“Even if it’s not someone personally in your family or a spouse that’s struggling, you might find yourself face to face with a peer that needs someone to talk to – or you that will be able to recognize the signs to potentially get them help,” said Kehres.

As a part of her community outreach, Elle is organizing this year’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Walk in Raleigh. You can register to walk on April 5 here.
