The UNC women’s lacrosse team opened its season on a high note this past Saturday, edging out James Madison 16-14 in a high-scoring affair.

Junior midfielder Marie McCool led the way for the Tar Heels, scoring a career-high six goals–including what turned out to be the game-winner. She also added a pair of assists to finish with eight points in total.

McCool was rewarded for her phenomenal effort on Tuesday when the ACC selected her as its Offensive Player of the Week.

Louisville defender Stephanie McNamara took home the Defensive Player of the Week honor.

One of two active college players on the U.S. World Cup Team, McCool is expected to play a large role for the Tar Heels in 2017 as they look to defend last year’s national championship.

Although it’s only a one-game sample size, the native of Moorestown, New Jersey already appears to be in midseason form–which is exactly what the doctor ordered for head coach Jenny Levy and company.
