With the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup set to begin this July in England, United States head coach Ricky Fried announced the 18-player lineup for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Included as part of that group are four Tar Heels–including current midfielder Marie McCool, a junior who was one of only two active college players to make the cut.
Former UNC players joining McCool on the team will be: midfielder Laura Zimmerman (Class of 2012) and defenders Kristen Carr (2010) and Jennifer Russell (2010).
The 18-player list was trimmed down from a starting group of 25 players, who all competed together most recently during the Team USA Spring Premiere at IMG Academy in Florida.
There, the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated the University of Florida and Notre Dame in a pair of exhibition games by a combined score of 42-24.
“Of the three World Cups I’ve been a part of, including this summer’s, this was the most difficult process because of the wealth of talent in the player pool, but I’m excited with the group moving forward as we strive to defend gold,” Fried said.
