Although darkness kept teams from completing the final three holes of the second round on Monday, the UNC men’s golf team currently sits in fourth place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate at the Royal Oaks Golf Club in Dallas.

The Tar Heels posted a team score of 12-over par through 33 holes on Monday, as they recovered from a poor showing in the first round of the tournament–which was held Monday morning.

After shooting 19-over-par through the first 15 holes of the event, UNC would go on to post a score of 7-under-par over the next 18 holes before play was suspended.

Freshman Ryan Gerard and junior Austin Hitt are the Tar Heels’ top individual competitors so far, ending the day tied for seventh place at 1-over-par.

Just behind them is Ryan Burnett at 2-over-par.

Defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State leads the overall team competition at 7-under-par, the only team with a negative score at this point.

Arkansas (+4) and NC State (+6) round out the other teams in front of UNC on the leaderboard.

Second round action will resume Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., with the final round played later on that same day.

“We’re proud of the guys for the way they hung in there today,” UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “It’s an extremely difficult golf course and conditions were even tougher this morning with cooler temperatures and some wind. Everyone except Oklahoma State struggled early, but our guys did what we always talk about, which is to be resilient. They stayed disciplined and committed.”
