The UNC men’s golf team put together the best round in program history and the lowest in the history of the ACC Championships on Friday, as the Tar Heels have built a nine-shot lead through two rounds.

Freshman sensation Peter Fountain led the way for UNC, firing a 7-under-par 63 in the second round to match the all-time 18-hole record at the ACC Championships.

The Tar Heels had a total of four players shoot below par in the second round, with Austin Hitt (66), Ryan Burnett (67) and Austin Greaser (69) joining Fountain in doing so. As a team, UNC shot 265 for the round–breaking the program record for lowest round at any tournament by three strokes.

Georgia Tech set the previous ACC Championship record of 267 back in 2006.

The fifth-seeded Tar Heels hold a nine-shot lead over second-place NC State heading into Saturday’s third round. The top four teams will advance to match play competition, which begins on Sunday and concludes with the finals on Monday.

An individual ACC champion will be decided Saturday, however, as NC State’s Benjamin Shipp (-8) is one stroke ahead of Burnett and two shots clear of Fountain and Hitt.

“Today was obviously a really good day for the Tar Heels,” UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “We had excellent play from several guys. Records were set and we have three players in the top three in a conference championship that features an incredible field with some of the best teams in the country. Our guys were disciplined and stuck to their process really well today.”
