UNC wrapped up play in Sunday’s third round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship sitting in sixth place, good enough to advance to Monday’s fourth round at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Tar Heels finished Sunday with a combined 54-hole score of 13-over-par and were tied for sixth alongside Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Of the 30 teams competing in the event, only first-place Oklahoma State (-1) remained below par. The Cowboys head entered Monday with a 13-shot advantage over second-place Oklahoma (+12).

The top 15 teams advanced to compete on Monday, while the top eight schools following the fourth round will get a fresh slate to compete head-to-head in match play until a champion is determined.

UNC — the No. 6 seed in the event — is seeking the first men’s golf national championship in school history.

The Tar Heels are ensured of their fourth consecutive top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships due to qualifying for the 15-team fourth round on Monday.

ACC champion Peter Fountain is the Tar Heels’ top performing individual through three rounds. His score of even par has him in a tie for 12th place overall.

Ryan Gerard is the next closest UNC player on the leaderboard in a tie for 28th at 4-over-par.

Oklahoma State’s Bo Jin leads all individuals at 9-under-par heading into Monday, two shots clear of Clemson’s Turk Pettit in second place.

“Our guys battled like crazy today and again showed their mental toughness and grit,” UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “The course and conditions are very difficult, but we look forward to the challenge of competing at Grayhawk again tomorrow.”
