UNC freshman Peter Fountain was selected as a PING First Team All-American on Tuesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Fountain — this year’s ACC individual champion — was one of just two freshmen among the 12 players named to the coaches’ All-American team, joining Nick Gabrelcik of North Florida.

The Raleigh native also becomes just the third Tar Heel freshman to be named a First Team All-American, joining an exclusive list which includes Davis Love III (1983) and Kevin O’Connell (2008).

In nine starts this season, Fountain racked up two wins, two second-place finishes, four top-five finishes and five top-10’s. His stroke average of 69.68 set a new UNC single-season record and was the best mark in the ACC — just ahead of the 69.71 average posted by Florida State’s John Pak, the top-ranked player in the country.

The Raleigh native was recently named the ACC Freshman of the Year and a member of the PING All-East Region Team, after becoming the first freshman to win the conference title since 2006.

He finished tied for 13th overall at the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale and led the Tar Heels to a tie for fifth place at the event, the program’s best finish since taking third back in 1993. Fountain was also the only UNC player to win in the match play portion of the NCAA Championship, defeating David Puig of No. 1 seed Arizona State.

“Peter was tremendous this year,” UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto said. “Being named a First Team All-America is incredible and something Peter absolutely earned with stellar play the entire season. The best part is he is young and still has parts of his game that can and will improve.”
