As the local governments of Orange County recognize Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, community members will see several pauses to services in honor of the holiday.

While some town offices for Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough have reopened to the public this year after remaining closed during the height of COVID-19, all will be closed on Monday. Other resources offered to town and county residents will be changed as well.

Here’s a list of what services will be altered on Monday, May 31:

Town of Chapel Hill

For Chapel Hill residents, Monday will see an interruption to residential and commercial trash pickup. Residential trash will be collected instead on Wednesday, June 2, while Monday’s commercial trash will be collected by the end of the week.

Chapel Hill Transit will not be running any of its buses on Monday. Reduced weekday routes, GoTriangle’s 420 route and EZ rider service are set to resume on Tuesday, June 1.

Additionally, the Chapel Hill Public Library’s Park and Pickup service will be closed.

Curbside recycling in the town will not be affected.

Town of Carrboro

The Town of Carrboro did not indicate any other services offered to residents will be affected by Memorial Day beyond town offices being closed.

Town of Hillsborough

Hillsborough town offices remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but residents will see other services affected on Memorial Day.

The Town of Hillsborough will not service solid waste routes, with residents whose garbage is typically collected on Mondays set to receive service on Tuesday. Brush collection will follow the same schedule as garbage collection, according to the town.

Orange County Government

In addition to town governments, the Orange County Government will be closed on Monday, with offices resuming normal operations on Tuesday.

Curbside recycling will be collected under the normal schedule on Monday, but Orange County says all manned Waste and Recycling Centers and the Landfill will be closed. County residents are urged to contact the Orange County Solid Waste Management Department for additional information.

Additionally, Orange County Public Transportation will operate on a limited service, only serving the in-county dialysis route.

The county-run walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Whitted Human Services Building will also be closed.

There are several Memorial Day events scheduled throughout Orange County, including a procession by the American Legion in Chapel Hill and the Orange County government hosting its Memorial Day service at the Veterans Memorial.
