Following an eighth place finish in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship on Monday in Scottsdale, Arizona, the No. 6 seed Tar Heels advanced to the match play portion of the event.

UNC shot 12-over-par in Monday’s fourth round to finish stroke play with a combined team score of 25-over-par, which was enough to finish in the top eight and advance to compete again on Tuesday.

The Tar Heels earned themselves a date with first-place Arizona State in match play after the Sun Devils rallied from 14 shots behind 54-hole leader Oklahoma State to finish at 3-under-par — the only school to finish the fourth round below par.

UNC is now guaranteed a finish of at least eighth in the event, which would be its best finish since taking third place back in 1993.

Freshman Peter Fountain — this year’s ACC champion — was the Tar Heels’ top finishing individual, tying for 13th place with a score of 2-over-par. His 13th-place finish is the best by a UNC player at the NCAA Championships since Ben Griffin took 11th back in 2017.

UNC also received a final round 69 from junior Ryan Burnett, who tied for 34th alongside teammate Ryan Gerard at 7-over-par.

Clemson’s Turk Pettit claimed the individual crown at 7-under-par, just one shot ahead of Oklahoma State’s Bo Jin.

The eight teams advancing to match play on Tuesday include: No. 1 Arizona State, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Pepperdine, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Illinois, No. 6 Florida State, No. 7 Vanderbilt and the eighth-seeded Tar Heels.

Florida State and UNC are the lone remaining teams representing the ACC.

Should the Tar Heels upset Arizona State, they would move on to face the winner of the match between Oklahoma and Illinois.
