With a 4-1 victory over rival Duke late Wednesday night in Orlando, the top-ranked UNC women’s tennis team remained undefeated and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final Four.
The Tar Heels began the match by winning the doubles point, then went up 2-0 following a singles victory by freshman Fiona Crawley (6-1, 6-0) on Court Five.
Duke then got its only point of the night with a win on Court Three by Chloe Beck (6-1, 6-4) over UNC’s Cameron Morra.
Back-to-back come-from-behind wins from Reilly Tran (5-7, 6-1, 6-1) and Makenna Jones (0-6, 6-4, 6-4) then sealed up UNC’s place in the Final Four.
“I give a lot of credit to Duke,” UNC head coach Brian Kalbas said afterwards. “They played really well. I congratulated Jamie [Ashworth] and he said it’s the best they played all year. For them to do that on this stage as late as we were playing, it was tough. We withstood a lot of talented players playing really well and confident with nothing to lose. It was interesting because we had three super seniors there at the end. It was comforting to have that kind of experience out there.”
Duke ends the year with a record of 18-7 this season, while the Tar Heels are now a perfect 30-0 overall and have won their last 48 matches overall dating back to 2020.
