A fantastic season came to a crashing halt for the second-ranked UNC women’s soccer team on Sunday night in San Jose, as the Tar Heels lost in penalty kicks to No. 1 Stanford in the NCAA Championship Game.

It was just the second loss in 26 matches for the Tar Heels (24-1-2) this season, while Stanford ends the year at 23-1-1 after defeating UNC 5-4 in the penalty shootout.

Tar Heel goalkeeper Claudia Dickey made a career-high six saves in the match, but only made one save in the shootout–meaning the longest national title drought in UNC’s storied history, one dating back to 2012, will continue at least one more year.

Neither team managed to score a single goal in regulation or the two extra time periods, but Stanford tallied 21 shots in the match compared to just 12 for the Tar Heels.

Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer was the hero on Sunday, making two saves in the penalty shootout to lift her team to victory.
