Despite allowing a goal less than seven minutes into Friday’s NCAA Semifinal match in San Jose, the second-ranked UNC women’s soccer team came from behind to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Washington State Cougars.
As a result, the Tar Heels will play for the national championship against top-ranked Stanford on Sunday with a chance to end their six-year NCAA title drought–the longest in the program’s storied history.
First Team All-American Alessia Russo scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 24th minute to tie the match at 1-1 on Friday, before teammate Alexis Strickland put UNC ahead for good with her goal in the 38th minute.
Tar Heel goalkeeper Claudia Dickey made a pair of huge saves in the second half to help preserve the victory.
