Senior midfielder Marie McCool scored a whopping seven goals Sunday afternoon at Kenan Stadium, to help lead the seventh-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team to a dominant 23-4 blowout over the Liberty Flames.

In addition to McCool’s incredible scoring effort–which tied her career high and came on just eight shots–freshman attacker Jamie Ortega contributed five goals of her own. The two stars made up over half of the scoring for head coach Jenny Levy’s Tar Heels (2-1).

After dropping the season opener on the road against James Madison, UNC has now recovered to win two games in the last three days to pull above .500 for the first time in 2018.

Six of McCool’s seven goals came during the first half on Saturday, as the Tar Heels jumped out to an incredible 15-1 lead by halftime.

By the end of the afternoon, eight different players had scored a goal–and the team came just one shy of the program’s all-time single-game record of 24 goals.

UNC also compiled 38 shots in the game, compared to just eight for Liberty.

At one point, the Tar Heels led 21-1 before Liberty scored three of the last five goals of the day.
