Just under a week removed from winning the ITA National Indoor Championship, the top-ranked UNC women’s tennis team continued its hot streak Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill–cruising to a 4-1 victory over the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines.
The win improves head coach Brian Kalbas’s squad to 11-0 so far in 2018, and represents the Tar Heels’ third victory over Michigan in the last four years.
UNC got off to a bit of a slow start in doubles play against the Wolverines–falling behind 3-0 on two different courts–before ultimately rallying to take the point.
Then in singles competition, the Tar Heels took a 3-0 lead after a pair of wins in straight sets from Jessie Aney (6-2, 6-3) and Chloe Oullet-Pizer (6-2, 6-3).
Michigan (4-5) scored its only point of the afternoon with an upset victory on Court One from Kate Fahey (7-6, 6-1) over UNC freshman Alle Sanford–the nation’s No. 6 ranked player.
ACC Player of the Week Sara Daavettila closed out the match victory for UNC with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Michigan’s Chiara Lommer.
Up Next:
The Tar Heels will look to stay undefeated with their next match also serving as their ACC opener. NC State is scheduled to visit Chapel Hill on Wednesday, with that match scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
