This series of posts will be made monthly on Chapelboro to help inform our community when local government meetings will be. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check respective town websites for additional information.
Budget season is upon our local governments, meaning a busy May schedule full of work sessions, public hearings and other discussions ahead of the new fiscal year. In addition to that, the community’s elected officials are continuing discussions on COVID-19 responses with shifting state guidance, economic development projects and much more.
Here is a full list of the scheduled meetings for elected officials across Orange and Chatham Counties for this month, before the local governments hit a another busy stretch ahead of summer break.
Chapel Hill Town Government
The Chapel Hill Town Council is set to meet at least once every week in May, with the first week seeing a pair of council gatherings. On Monday May 3, the town council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. to be presented data from recent traffic analysis projecting the impact of the proposed Aura development. Later in the week, the council will hold a regular business meeting on Wednesday May 5, at 7 p.m.
The next Wednesday, May 12, the Chapel Hill Town Council will hold a hybrid meeting and work session to allow time for discussion on the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. That meeting is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. The council will then finish the month with two regular business meetings on Wednesday May 19 and Wednesday May 26, both of which are set to begin at 7 p.m.
The public is encouraged to register for Town of Chapel Hill meetings in webinar fashion if they want to participate in public comment, but all videos can be live-streamed and accessed after completion on the town website in the following days.

Carrboro Town Government
Like in April, the Carrboro Town Council is set to meet four times through the month of May, once each Tuesday. The elected officials are set to conduct business meetings on May 4, 11, 18 and 25, with each set to begin at 7 p.m.

Hillsborough Town Government
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners last met on Monday April 26, meaning it will not meet again until Monday May 10. The board’s bi-weekly meeting pattern means the other business meeting for Hillsborough’s elected officials is set to be held Monday May 24.
Both business meetings are set to be held virtually and will begin streaming at 7 p.m. on the town’s YouTube page.

Orange County Government
May is a month full of budget discussions for the Orange County Board of Commissioners. The board will hold two business meetings, on Tuesday May 4 and Tuesday May 18, but will hold even more meetings for preparation ahead of approving a county budget.
The county commissioners will hold a budget public hearing on Tuesday May 11 in lieu of a business meeting before holding three straight weeks of work sessions for budget proposal discussions. The board will hold those on Thursday May 13, Thursday May 20 and Thursday May 27.
All the Orange County Board of Commissioners meetings and work sessions are slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be done virtually.

Chatham County Government
The Chatham County Board of Commissioners is similarly scheduled to hold several work sessions on its proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The commissioners are set to hear the full 2021-2022 budget proposal on Monday May 3 at 6 p.m. in-person at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center.
From there, the board is slated to hold another in-person business meeting on Monday May 17 at the Historic Chatham County Courthouse in downtown Pittsboro, which will also begin the public hearing process on the proposed county budget. The public hearing will continue to Tuesday May 18, if necessary, before the county commissioners hold three work sessions to continue discussion on the budget. Those are slated for Thursday May 20, Friday May 21 and Tuesday May 25, all starting at 9 a.m.
