This series of posts will be made monthly on Chapelboro to help inform our community when local government meetings will be. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check respective town websites for additional information.
A new year is here and many local governments in Orange County and Chatham County are finishing their holiday breaks. While 2020 may now be behind us, many of the discussions, projects and topics are set to now continue. With COVID-19 response, economic development proposals and budget planning on agendas, January is sure to be a busy month.
Here is when to expect local government meetings in our community for the first few weeks of 2021:
Chapel Hill Town Government
The Chapel Hill Town Council will be one of the first local governments to return with a formal meeting in the new year. The seven council members and Mayor Pam Hemminger are set to hold a virtual work session on Wednesday, January 6, at 6:30 p.m. The following week, the council will hold a business meeting on Wednesday, January 13, that will begin virtually at 7 p.m.
One more business meeting is scheduled during January: Wednesday, January 27, at 7 p.m.
The public is encouraged to register for these Town of Chapel Hill meetings in webinar fashion if they want to participate in public comment, but all videos can be live-streamed and accessed after completion on the town website in the following days.

Hillsborough Town Government
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is set to continue its every-other week model for business meetings. The board is slated for two such meetings in January: one on Monday, January 11, and another on Monday, January 25. Both are set to begin streaming at 7 p.m. on the town’s YouTube page.

Orange County Government
The Orange County Board of Commissioners will begin 2021 with a continued public hearing carried over from the opening of discussion around the proposed Efland Station development. The are set to be held January 5 and January 12, with no more sign-ups for speakers allowed.
The schedule of those public hearings disrupts the board’s typical routine of meeting on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Instead, the county commissioners will hold only one regular business meeting: Tuesday, January 19 at 7 p.m.

Chatham County Government
The Chatham County Board of Commissioners will hold just one formal business meeting in January, but has planned an annual retreat to conduct planning and business discussions earlier in the month. According to the county’s website, the retreat will take place over January 11, 12 and 15.
The commissioners are set to hold their business meeting and work session off of their typical Monday schedule, and instead plan on holding it on Tuesday, January 19, beginning at 2 p.m. It will be located at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro.
