Labor Day is recognized as a holiday for local governments, meaning services in our community will be affected on Monday. Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough have all alerted residents of various changes for the day.

The Town of Chapel Hill said several of its normal operations will be disrupted. In addition to Chapel Hill Transit not running its bus lines, residential and commercial trash pick-up will be postponed. The make-up day for residential trash will be Wednesday, September 9, while commercial trash will be taken next Monday. Yard waste collection will not be affect, according to the town.

Parks and Recreation facilities in Chapel Hill will also experience some closures for the holiday. The town’s Parks and Recreation administrative office, indoor recreation facilities, playgrounds, picnic shelters and tables, public athletic fields, basketball courts, outdoor sand volleyball courts, batting cages and bocce-ball courts will all be off-limits during the holiday.

The Town of Hillsborough told residents similar services would be changed on Monday. Residents whose trash is typically picked up on Mondays will receive the service on Tuesday, September 8. Brush collection will also follow this schedule.

For Carrboro residents, the main service disruption is yard waste and loose leaves collection. Those who normally receive yard waste or loose leaf collection on Monday will be serviced on Tuesday, according to the town.

Orange County’s curbside recycling services will still pick up for those who have their bins emptied on Mondays. The county’s waste and recycling centers, however, will be closed for the holiday, as well as the Orange County landfill.
