Labor Day is used every year to recognize the contributions of all American workers. A federal holiday since 1894, various local governments in Orange County are also honoring the holiday this year.

Because of this, some regular services offered by the likes of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County to residents will be affected by government employees being off of work.

Here is a list of what services will be affected by Labor Day on Monday, September 6:

Town of Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill residents will see a variety of services altered on the holiday, in addition to the town offices being closed.

Trash collection in town will not be completed on Monday, with the make-up day set for Wednesday, September 8. Curbside recycling will not be affected by the holiday.

The Homestead Aquatics Center and the A.D. Clark Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., although the former requires residents to reserve a time slot.

Town of Carrboro

The Town of Carrboro will similarly close its town hall building and administrative offices on Monday. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, September 7.

The local government also said residents’ yard waste and loose leaves will be collected on Tuesday instead of the usual Monday collection day.

Monthly brush collection is also delayed a week because of the holiday, meaning it will begin on Monday, September 13.

Orange County Government

In addition to the town governments, the Orange County government will be closed on Monday, with offices resuming normal operations on Tuesday.

County facilities closing also means that the COVID-19 testing sites at the Whitted Building in Hillsborough and the Southern Human Services Center in Chapel Hill will also be closed.
