The greater Orange County community is set to celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the end of slavery in 1865, for the first time as an official town and county holiday this weekend.

As several events are scheduled throughout the region, including a motorcade, exhibits and a live music series of Black artists, some government services will be altered.

Here’s a list of what services will be altered this weekend throughout Orange County:

Town of Chapel Hill

For Chapel Hill residents, residential trash collection and curbside recycling will not be affected. Disruptions on Friday, June 18, include yard waste and commercial trash not being collected. The town government says Friday’s trash was collected in previous days.

Additionally, town government offices and the Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed to patrons on Saturday, June 19.

The Chapel Hill Transit system will continue running its regular service.

Town of Carrboro

The Town of Carrboro will see its town offices closed on Friday to recognize the freedom holiday. Residents who receive garbage collection on Fridays will be serviced on Monday, June 21, according to the town government.

Town of Hillsborough

Hillsborough town offices remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but residents will see other services affected on Saturday for Juneteenth.

The Town of Hillsborough will note service solid waste routes, as residents whose garbage is typically picked up on Fridays will see collection on Monday. Brush collection and bulk items collection will follow the same schedule, according to the local government.

Orange County Government

In addition to town governments, the Orange County Government will be closed on Friday to observe the holiday. Several county services will also be affected.

The county’s walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinics and testing sites will be closed on Friday. The Orange County Landfill will be closed Friday and will only operate from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday. The county’s waste and recycling centers will be closed on Friday before reopening from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, Orange County Public Transportation will operate on a limited service, only serving the in-county dialysis route.
