The 2023 celebration of Juneteenth will take place on Monday, June 19. The holiday commemorates the 1865 day when federal troops in Galveston, TX, informed enslaved Black people of their freedom following the end of the Civil War.

Here’s a list of what services will be altered throughout Orange County:


Town of Chapel Hill

The official town holiday will be on Monday, June 19.

Chapel Hill Transit will operate its Sunday service on Monday, meaning the U route will not run. The FCX and NS routes will run, in addition to EZ-Rider service. The transit offices will be closed.

Residential trash will be collected on Wednesday, June 21. Curbside recycling collection will be delayed by one day. Commercial trash collections will be completed by the end of the week. Yard trimmings collection will not be collected.

Public parks, greenways, trails and picnic shelters will be open on Monday, but the Parks and Recreation administrative offices, Chapel Hill Community Pool, Hargraves Center and Teen Center will all be closed. For more information, click here.

Town of Carrboro

Town offices will be closed on Monday, June 19. Yard waste and loose leaf collection will be postponed until Tuesday. For more information, click here.

Town of Hillsborough

Town offices will be closed on Monday, June 19. Garbage will be collected the following Tuesday, with services combining the normal Monday and Tuesday routes. For more information, click here.

Orange County Government

All Orange County administrative offices will be closed on Monday, June 19. All landfills and waste centers will be closed, with recycling collection delayed by one day.

All library locations will also be closed on Monday.
