
Labor Day is used every year to recognize the contributions of all American workers. A federal holiday since 1894, various local governments in Orange County are also honoring the holiday this year.
Because of this, some regular services offered by the likes of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County to residents will be affected by government employees being off of work.
Here is a list of what services will be affected by Labor Day on Monday, September 6:
Town of Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill residents will see a variety of services altered on the holiday, in addition to the town offices being closed.
Trash collection in town will not be completed on Monday, with the make-up day set for Wednesday, September 8. Curbside recycling will not be affected by the holiday.
Additionally, services like the Chapel Hill Public Library, the town’s Community Center, Community Center Pool, Hargraves Center, Northside Gym and Teen Center will be closed on Monday. The Homestead Aquatics Center and the A.D. Clark Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., although the former requires residents to reserve a time slot.
Town of Carrboro
The Town of Carrboro will similarly close its town hall building and administrative offices on Monday. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, September 7.
The local government also said residents’ yard waste and loose leaves will be collected on Tuesday instead of the usual Monday collection day.

Town of Hillsborough
The Town of Hillsborough is also closing its town offices and buildings for Labor Day. The town will not service solid waste routes, with residents whose garbage is typically collected on Mondays set to receive service on Tuesday.
Monthly brush collection is also delayed a week because of the holiday, meaning it will begin on Monday, September 13.
Orange County Government
In addition to the town governments, the Orange County government will be closed on Monday, with offices resuming normal operations on Tuesday.
County facilities closing also means that the COVID-19 testing sites at the Whitted Building in Hillsborough and the Southern Human Services Center in Chapel Hill will also be closed.
Additionally, the Orange County Landfill and Waste & Recycling Centers will not be open on Monday. County transportation services will also only run the Carolina Dialysis route.
One Orange County service not affected by Labor Day is curbside recycling. Residents who which to use the service will need to have carts outside by 7 a.m.
Carolina Together Testing Center
While not a local government, UNC is also recognizing the holiday and is not holding classes. The campus’ Carolina Together Testing Center, its main COVID-19 testing site for students, will also be closed because of this.
