The Orange County community has reached the end of 2023, and among the various activities to wrap up the year comes several closures for local governments in the area.
The towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough have each shared what to expect as their employees have off days recognizing New Year’s. Here is a full rundown of each:
Town of Chapel Hill
Most Chapel Hill offices will be closed on Monday, January 1 to honor the start of 2024. Some of the typical services available to residents will also be affected.
Residential trash, as well as curbside recycling, will not be collected on Monday. Monday’s trash will be take up on Wednesday, January 3, while curbside recycling for all residents will be delayed by one day through the week. Commercial trash pick-up will also be affected, with Monday’s collection not being completed until the end of the week. Yard trimmings and collection of Christmas trees will not be affected.
Chapel Hill Transit, which saw some routes affected leading up to the holiday weekend, will run its typical Saturday and Sunday service on December 30-31. The buses will not run at all on Monday, January 1.
The Chapel Hill Public Library will also be closed on Monday, while a handful of Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed on December 31 and January 1. They are:

Town of Carrboro
Similar to Chapel Hill, the Town of Carrboro’s administrative offices will be closed Monday, January 1 for the New Year’s holiday. Since most of its solid waste collection is done later in the week, the town’s collection schedule is not affected by the holiday. Yard waste collection, however, will be moved to Tuesday, January 2.
Town of Hillsborough
The Town of Hillsborough is also closing its town offices and buildings on January 1 for the holiday.
Garbage collection and brush collection for residents whose solid waste is picked up on Mondays will see a delay. Those areas will receive service on Tuesday, January 2 instead.
Christmas trees may be placed curbside for brush collection, which will follow the same schedule as garbage collection. Trees must be removed from the stand and be free of decoration.
Orange County
The Orange County Landfill, as well as county-run waste and recycling centers, will be closed on Sunday, December 31 and Monday, January 1. Solid waste administrative offices will also be closed. Additionally, the county-run recycling collection will not take place on Monday and will be delayed one day through the week.
The Orange County Public Library will also be closed for January 1, and Orange County Public Transportation will not run full service. The transit system will run its in-county dialysis route only to Carolina Dialysis in Carrboro before full service resumes on Tuesday, January 2.
Among other county offices that will be closed, Orange County Animal Services will not be open to the public on Monday. 911 services, however, will be operational like always — including for any animal-related emergencies.
