The celebration of Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4 will affect several local government services in and around Orange County. Here’s a look at what will and won’t be happening that week:


Town of Chapel Hill

All Chapel Hill administrative offices will be closed on Tuesday.

Residential trash and curbside recycling will not be collected, with all recycling routes delayed by one day. The residential trash make-up day is Wednesday, July 5. Yard trimmings collection will not be affected. Commercial trash will not be collected on Tuesday, and collections will instead be completed by the end of the week. In addition, the Orange County landfill and other waste collection centers will be closed on Tuesday.

The Chapel Hill Public Library will also be closed on Tuesday, and Chapel Hill Transit will not operate, with the exception of a shuttle service from Jackson Deck on the UNC campus and Southern Village for the night’s fireworks show. For more information on that, click here.

All Chapel Hill public parks, greenways and playgrounds will be open. The Chapel Hill Community Pool, Hargraves Center and Teen Center will be closed. For more information on Chapel Hill closures, click here.

Town of Carrboro

The Town of Carrboro’s administrative offices will be closed Tuesday, July 4. Emergency police, fire and rescue services may be reached by calling 9-1-1.

The town government will celebrate Independence Day with its annual reading of Frederick Douglass’ essay “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” The reading will begin at noon at the Carrboro Century Center.

Town of Hillsborough

Town offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4. Garbage will be collected the next day, with Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s routes combined. Curbside recycling collection will be delayed until Thursday. For more information, click here.

Orange County Government

All Orange County administrative offices will be closed on Tuesday, July 4. Curbside recycling will be delayed until Wednesday. All landfills, waste centers and related services will be closed. All Orange County Public Library locations will also be closed.

Orange County Public Transportation will operated limited service to the county dialysis center only. Full service will resume on Wednesday.

Emergency services are still available 24/7.
