Playing in his first career collegiate tournament earlier this week, UNC freshman Peter Fountain made quite an impression by finishing in second place.
Fountain ended the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational with an incredible 54-hole score of 10-under-par, five shots behind the winner–Clemson’s Jacob Bridgeman.
The Raleigh native was nine shots better than the next Tar Heel on the leaderboard, as Ryan Gerard tied for 15th place at 1-under-par.
Fountain’s performance also marks the second consecutive year that UNC has had a freshman take second place in their first college tournament–matching Austin Greaser’s finish at last year’s Turning Stone Invitational.
“I hit a lot of fairways and greens and putted well which leads to birdies and few bogeys,” Fountain said. “This definitely gives me a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season because it proves to myself that I can compete with any player in the country and I can help my team succeed.”
As a team, UNC finished fifth overall at 1-over-par. Host Florida State defeated Wake Forest on the second playoff hole to win, as both schools finished 22 strokes below par.
“Overall, each player did some great things during the tournament or had some bright spots but, collectively, we weren’t consistent enough,” head coach Andrew DiBitetto said. “It’s great to see things in practice, but it’s even better to see aspects of everyone’s game in tournaments. We learned a lot this week.”

UNC has its next tournament scheduled for Feb. 15-17 at The Prestige in La Quinta, California.
