With all five members of the team finishing the final round of the NCAA Kissimmee Regional under par for the first time in program history, the UNC men’s golf team finished the event in fourth place overall–earning a bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

It marks the first time UNC–which needed to finish in the top five–has qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament in back-to-back years since 2006 and 2007.

Junior Joshua Martin was the Tar Heels’ top performer on Wednesday, posting a 5-under-par 67.

Checking in just behind Martin on Wednesday was sophomore Austin Hitt, who shot a 2-under-par 70 to finish tied for third on the tournament’s individual leaderboard–the best performance by a Tar Heel at an NCAA Regional since Bob Cherry finished second in 2002.

Jose Montaño also shot a 70 in the final round, while fellow seniors Ben Griffin and William Register each tallied a 71 on their scorecards.

“They knew their backs were to the wall today,” head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “They knew they would face adversity under stress, and for all five of them to play under par is absolutely incredible. It’s a credit to their character and toughness.”

UNC will now get ready to travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the NCAA Championship Tournament, which runs from May 25-30.
