The UNC softball team dropped the series rubber match against Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Stadium by a score of 8-6 after allowing the Orange to score four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

An RBI groundout from Lexi Godwin helped the Tar Heels (9-13, 3-3 ACC) score one run in the final inning to try and make a comeback, but Syracuse (10-10, 2-1 ACC) was able to recover and shut the door for the win.

Megan Dray had a two-run home run for UNC in the bottom of the third to put the Tar Heels ahead 3-1, however Syracuse responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to go back ahead.

UNC tacked on one run in each of the final three frames, but that would not be enough to overcome Syracuse’s four-run blitz in the final inning.

“Winning Friday set us up well to at least win the series,” Tar Heel head coach Donna J. Papa said afterwards. “I felt like, today especially, we did a lot of good things and put ourselves in good position to win. We just needed three outs, but unfortunately we couldn’t get that.”
