Brittany Pickett and Dominique Monteon each hit home runs on Saturday in Chapel Hill to help lead the UNC softball team to a 7-3 victory over Virginia.

Monteon launched a solo shot in the second inning to make it 2-0 in favor of the Tar Heels (11-4, 7-8 ACC), before UNC added two more runs in the third inning on RBIs from Kiannah Pierce and Campbell Hutcherson.

Virginia (12-20, 8-15 ACC) finally got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Tar Heels responded with an RBI double from Taylor Puetz and a two-run blast by Pickett.

The Cavaliers then received their own two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. That would not be enough to threaten UNC’s lead, however, and the Tar Heels hung on to collect the victory and snap what had been a six-game losing streak.

This was the Tar Heels’ first win since a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame back on March 14 after having two series postponed.
