The 20th-ranked UNC men’s golf team earned a dominant victory in the Western Intercollegiate on Sunday, finishing a full 10 strokes ahead of No. 5 California in the final standings.

Seniors Jose Montaño and William Register led the way on Sunday, as Montaño shot a final-round 65 to end the round five strokes under par and Register fired a 69 to help keep UNC atop the team leaderboard.

It was another senior, however, in Chapel Hill native Ben Griffin that finished with the team’s best individual score. Griffin finished fifth overall after shooting a 66 on Friday, a 67 on Saturday and a 70 on Sunday.

Each of the six Tar Heels in the lineup scored in the 60’s during at least one of the tournament’s three rounds–helping give the team its second win of the season, a feat it hasn’t accomplished in three years.

“I’m so happy for all our guys. We have a group that works hard and we’ve been learning and growing and getting better all year,” head coach Andrew DiBitetto said afterwards. “They’re confident and have been waiting for their breakthrough moment and maybe this is it.

“We won the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at home earlier this year, but this is a big tournament against a great field,” the coach added. “So I am really happy for them to be rewarded with a win.”
