UNC freshman Ryan Gerard broke the Tar Heel men’s golf all-time record for lowest round on Monday, firing a 10-under-par 61 in the third, and final, round of the Fighting Irish Classic at Notre Dame.

His outstanding performance helped UNC finish third overall at the event with a team score of 31-under-par, trailing only tournament champion Illinois (-44) and second-place Georgia Southern (-34).

Despite making such a huge charge up the individual leaderboard on Monday, Gerard–a Raleigh native–ultimately finished second overall at 14-under-par.

Gerard’s score of 199 total strokes for the whole tournament was the first time in UNC history a player finished a 54-hole event with a score less than 200.

“The big difference between the second round and the other rounds was the speed of my putts,” Gerard said afterwards. “I gauged the speed on the greens so much better yesterday morning and again today. Sunday afternoon I struggled a lot with the speed on the greens otherwise I could have saved at least something under par.

“But it’s really cool to break these records knowing that there have been so many great players at UNC and the fact I can put my name in the record book like this is awesome,” he added.

Georgia Southern’s Steven Fisk, at 15-under-par, won the event with a score just one stroke better.
